UK Supreme Court RULES WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange Can Appeal Recent Ruling!…

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Monday won a preliminary effort to overturn a U.K. court ruling of extradition to the U.S. to stand trial on espionage charges.

• The U.K. high court permitted Assange to appeal the case to the U.K. Supreme court.

• Assange’s fiancee, Stella Moris, said in a statement: “Make no mistake, we won today in court,” she went on to say, “We will fight this until Julian is free.”

• This decision is the latest battle in Assange’s war to avoid trial in the U.S. on a series of charges related to the Wikileaks founders’ publication of classified information over a decade ago.

• Assange faces 17 charges of espionage and one charge of computer misuse linked to WikiLeaks’ publication of thousands of leaked military and diplomatic documents.

• Just a year ago, an extradition request by the U.S. was rejected because Assange was a suicide risk if he was to be sent to the U.S.

• In the new ruling that was just overturned, Assange’s lawyers focused on the fact that the U.S. had made no assurances that Assange would be safe from self-harm and that his mental state would be adequately assessed.

• The High Court permitted Assange to appeal to the Supreme Court so the highest court can decide “in what circumstances can an appellate court receive assurances from a requesting state … in extradition proceedings.”

• Assange’s lawyers argue that his client is protected in the U.S. under the 1st amendment of the constitution that guarantees freedom of the press for being a journalist
