The President of the United States declared a National Emergency to bypass Congress and spend billions on barriers along the southern border, building his long-promised wall that comes with significant political and legal risks.
Trump said this about signing the National Emergency,”I am going to be signing a national emergency,” and “It’s a great thing to do because we have an invasion of drugs, invasion of gangs, invasion of people.”
Trump predicted the move will be challenged in federal court, but said he would eventually prevail.
“I could do the wall over a long period of time. I didn’t need to do this, but I’d rather do it much faster,” he said in his speech.
Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have both made it clear they will do anything to overturn the emergency declaration.
In a joint statement Pelosi and Schumer said, “The president’s unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence to our Constitution and makes America less safe,” and they added, “The president is not above the law. The Congress cannot let the president shred the Constitution.”
