President Trump on Wednesday awarded a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Travis W. Atkins, who heroically sacrificed his life and saved the lives of three fellow soldiers while fighting in Iraq in 2007.
Atkins’ son, 22-year-old Trevor Oliver Atkins, accepted the award on his father’s behalf. “Your father’s courage and sacrifice will live for all time,” Trump said.
“Every time we see our stars and stripes waving in the sky, we will thank our great Travis and we will think of every American hero who gave their last breath to defend our liberty and our homeland and our people and our great American flag.”
