Supremes Rule Excessive Fines Unconstitutional in States

On Wednesday, The Supreme Court ruled a constitutional provision prohibiting the imposition of excessive fines extends beyond the federal government to states and cities now.

The Supremes unanimous decision in expanding the Eighth Amendment’s excessive fines clause.

This ruling means in states and cities there must be a reasonable relationship in forfeiture when it comes to offense and punishment.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had this to say on the expansion, “For good reason, the protection against excessive fines has been a constant shield throughout Anglo-American history: Exorbitant tolls undermine other constitutional liberties.”
