Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, announced the new Climate Change Committee which surprised many when Democrat Ocasio-Cortez was not chosen.
The panel deals with examining climate change and steps to mitigate it, the members range from tenure lawmakers to only three selective freshman. 8 democrats in total.
Pelosi previously named Kathy Castor , Democrat from Florida, to be chairwoman of the committee.
Nancy Pelosi explained the committee,”This new Select Committee will spearhead Democrats’ work to develop innovative, effective solutions to prevent and reverse the climate crisis,” Pelosi said in a statement.
“It will generate the energy and action required to permanently reduce pollution so that we can honor our responsibility to be good stewards of the planet for future generations,” she further said.
Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not respond to a request for comment on the committee lineup or if she sought a spot on the panel. Nothing has been heard from her yet.
The Republican members of the panel have not yet been named, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California, is responsible for picking the GOP lawmakers of the committee.
