Governor Ron DeSantis has scheduled an election in Florida’s 20th congressional district.
REP. ALCEE HASTINGS (D)
Rep. Hasting passed away in early April after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 84 and was the representative of Florida’s 20th congressional district, which leans Democrat. The area is majority African American.
The district is considered safe for the Democrats as primary polls state that whoever runs for Hastings’ seat as a Democrat will win. Democrats had been pressuring Governor DeSantis to hold the election ASAP. Wendy Link, the supervisor of elections in Palm Beach County, proposed that the governor call a primary on Sept. 14, with a general election on Nov. 9. Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief, one of the Democrats running to replace Hastings, had called for a primary to be held in August, with the general election happening in November.
Republicans have been debating what to do about the 20th district in Florida; many believe that by scheduling the election until next year, the GOP can have more to campaign in the area and try to flip it.
