Dems and White House try to revive Immigration Talks

LAWMAKERS are opening the door to reviving immigration negotiations, but a renewed effort to find a deal on border security is facing long odds on Capitol Hill.

PRESIDENT Trump’s frustration with the Department of Homeland Security boiling over and a spike in migrants detained at the border, the White House is jump-starting its outreach to Democrats but not before President Trump forcing Democrats into a corner on Twitter this week

WHITE HOUSE Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and acting DHS secretary Kevin McAleenan met Wednesday night with a group of Democrats including Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.), the top Democrats on the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees to make the case on why it’s time for Congress to resolve the “humanitarian crisis” along the border.

DEMOCRAT Dick Durbin was noncommittal about the chances that the latest round of talks will break the stalemate between Congress and the administration, which has rejected immigration deals that have emerged from the Senate.

“I can just tell you, this president has broken my heart so many times on immigration,” he told Reporters,  “I start with a healthy degree of skepticism that we can do anything substantial.”

Other Democrats involved in the talks described them as “broad,” with no decision yet on the parameters for further negotiations.

MEETINGS Lawmakers and the administration are expected to meet again after Congress’s two-week recess.

The path to getting a deal on immigration and border security is fraught with political and policy landmines, with bases in both parties likely to draw hard lines on what they could support in a potential agreement heading into the 2020 election.

  1. Why not go in with enthusiasm instead of skepticism for a change? I do not blame the Republicans for not wanting the Democrats deals! They were overly infested with outrageous stipulations that would actually KEEP the exact same policies! Trump offered to give DACA immigrants a path to citizenship that they didn’t have before and more but the Democrats were so against anything that Trump had a hand in so they made ridiculous requests! That is not doing the country or immigrants any good! Trump is well aware that we need immigrants relocating here but he and everyone who voted for him know the loopholes are ruining the program! Check out information on birthing hotels! You would be knocking on the Dems doors demanding action especially if your worried about Russian takeover! They are the ones with the hotels but there are others now following their example.
