The Democrats have been fighting hard for Mexican Unions to have secret ballots, after refusing to give secret ballots to U.S unions.
DEMOCRATS: The Democrats are considering giving Mexican unions before considering to support USMCA.
They argued that Mexico had to meet a labor rights provision of USMCA that says Mexico must adopt “an effective system to verify that elections of union leaders are carried out through a personal, free, and secret vote of union members.”
Democrats, argue that card check was necessary to ensure that workers could form unions. Otherwise, the outcome would be they argue, businesses would use fraud and intimidation to undermine organizing.
MEXICO: In the case of Mexico, however, Democrats have argued that the existing labor laws allow businesses to co-opt unions, resulting in labor leaders that serve the businesses’ interests, rather than the workers’.
Secret ballot union elections would help stem this abuse, they argue, by ensuring that workers elect leaders that represent them.
CONCLUSION: The Democrats want Mexican unions to have secret ballots in order to organize their unions in a more effective way.
The Democrats did refuse to give American unions the secret ballots just so they can give it to Mexican unions instead.
